John Miličić’s Zagreb-Split is an assemblage made from several smaller images constituting a large-scale sequence. In it, Miličić’s unique approach to time is almost exaggerated by painting scenes he glimpsed from bus or train windows. The work presented here specifically refers to his travel route from Zagreb to Split (Croatia), where he uses destination/distance and its various moments as a key pictorial factor.

Many of John’s gestures are intuitive, he plans little, instead sketching and painting fast, attempting to catch moments in time that, despite being fixed, seem in motion. The viewer of Zagreb-Split is hence in an interesting position. We could say that first he/she needs to “visually traverse” the painting’s sequence before reflecting on its whole.

John Miličić was born 1992 in Split, Croatia. In 2018 graduated in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. Lives and works in Hvar, Croatia.
