In the works, Lost in the Verge and Insect (Drone) Bath, Samuel Dominguez creates imaginary, futuristic landscapes based on his research into Chilean aquatic flora, primarily its slow migration to Florida, leading to broader changes in ecosystems. Both pieces showcase discrete particulates of this speculative environment; one representing a drone and an insect, depicted “ruminating” on contemporary pollinators, and the other crafted as a watery pond. Using various synthetic/organic materials which simulate a fantasy natural habitat, Dominguez envisions future ecology, questioning its function, change and versatility.
Samuel Domínguez (1995, Santiago, Chile) is a Chilean-born artist based in London, UK. He studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Universidad Finis Terrae, and completed an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art. His work has been exhibited in Chile, Argentina, Peru, the USA, Italy, the UK, South Korea and Croatia. He has been a lecturer at the Whitechapel Gallery and the University for the Creative Arts. His work has been displayed in museums such as the Museum of Visual Arts (MAVI) in Santiago and the Multimedia Cultural Centre in Split. He has led research and curatorial projects for Galería Patricia Ready in Santiago and the Royal Academy of Spain in Rome. He is currently represented by Mahara+Co in the USA and by Gertrude in the UK.
