Selina Zürrer adopts an investigative approach to broad cultural shifts through materials with historically vague meanings, such as hemp, striving to deconstruct them. Her work Untitled uses THC-containing hemp strands that are woven into a wallet-like object, referring to “100 % hemp” wallets, widely available head shop articles in the 1990s and early 2000s. Due to anti-hemp campaigns and the overall prohibition of THC in the mentioned decades, hemp as a textile fiber lost its popularity and availability. Building her work upon an inquiry into these events, Zürrer attempts to raise awareness about contradictions and stigmas ascribed to hemp. The improvised wallet thus symbolizes constructed narratives concerning hemp, consumption aesthetics and material trends today.
Selina Zürrer (1992, Zurich, Switzerland) completed her BA in Media Arts at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in 2015. In 2019, she was awarded a six-month studio residency by the City of Zurich in Genoa. Following this residency, she pursued an MA in Fine Arts, which she completed at ZHdK in 2024. Zürrer’s practice is characterized by a playful yet in-depth engagement with history, society, and perception. Her work reflects on power relations, identity, and memory. She exhibited at Kunstmuseum Olten, Alte Fabrik Rapperswil, Helmhaus, and Zurich in a solo exhibition at sic! Elephanthouse, Lucerne, among other venues.
